Annual training is mandated by California’s Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to ensure providers and delegated entities are meeting the unique and diverse needs of all members. Please view this two-page alert for more information on what trainings are required and how to access the links for trainings and training material.

Type of Training Requirement Due Date
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) HIPAA is a federal law that required the creation of national standards to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient’s consent or knowledge. The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued the HIPAA Privacy Rule to implement the requirements of HIPAA. June 30, 2022
Fraud Waste and Abuse Health Plan of San Joaquin (HPSJ) is a licensed health care services plan regulated by the Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) and contracted with the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). HPSJ is committed to protecting members, our network of providers, and public interests by preventing, detecting, investigating, correcting, and reporting Fraud, Waste, and Abuse (FWA). Under legal requirements overseen by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), 42 C.F.R. §422.503 and 42 C.F.R. §423.504, you are required to either complete the FWA training offered on the HPSJ website and send HPSJ a signed attestation, or attest that you have completed another, acceptable FWA training. Here are the steps you need to take:

  1. Click on the www.hpsj-mvhp.org/provider-trainings/ to access all three trainings and materials
  2. Attest you have completed review of these materials – either provided by HPSJ or another organization
  3. An authorized person (Office Manager or Medical Administrator) may complete the training attestation on behalf of each provider.
  4. For Cultural Competency and Sensitivity Training: Providers that have completed a training receive a Cultural Competency designation in the HPSJ Provider Directory.
